Authentic Assessments

At SMAN 5, authentic assessments are not just about testing knowledge—they’re about exploring real-world challenges that bring learning to life! 📚✨

This section highlights how the school uses innovative and engaging assessments that mirror real-life experiences, encouraging students to apply their skills in meaningful ways. From project-based tasks to hands-on activities, these assessments empower learners to take charge of their educational journey, making each step of their voyage more exciting and impactful. It’s where growth meets adventure, and every assessment is a new opportunity for discovery!

Collaborative Group Work

Students are assigned group projects that encourage collaboration and creativity. As I spoke with students and teachers from SMAN 5 and observed classes, I learned that the recent group projects assigned to students included submitting a video recording of a talk show and conducting research.

Exhibitions

Last November 15, I had the chance to attend the "Proyek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila". It was an exciting event where Grade 10 students showcased their handmade products and food items. With this event, The students were able to apply what they’ve learned in real-world tasks.

Simulations and Role Plays

On November 20, I had the chance to attend the "Festival Bulan Bahasa Cendana 2024" (Cendana Language Month Festival 2024). It was a lively event where students took on the roles of Indonesian heroes and performed short skits based on their heroic deeds. Moreover, teachers also usually assign simulation activities, similar to the talk show task.

Project-Based Assessments

Students are also assigned project-based assessments that encourage them to dive deeper into real-world topics. The most recent project required them to conduct research on sociology topics.

Presentations and Performances

Authentic assessments, such as role-playing and debates, are frequently given to students, especially in their English subjects. These activities not only help students practice their speaking skills in real-world contexts but also encourage critical thinking and effective communication.

Performance-Based Assessment

An example of this was when the students were asked to write a letter to someone special in their lives. This task is a great example of an authentic assessment because it connects to students' own experiences and interests. This type of authentic assessment is usually applied by teachers through relating the activity to students' lives or interests.

With all those activities, I can really say that SMAN 5 extends learning beyond classrooms, offering students the chance to grow, explore, and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. It’s truly inspiring to see how these hands-on, real-world experiences shape their learning journey. SMAN 5 is not just about textbooks and exams—it’s about creating opportunities for students to thrive, express themselves, and prepare for the challenges of the future!
