Outcomes of Practicum

Embracing every wave in the journey of growth and discovery 🌊

In this section, I'll take you through each wave of my journey, sharing the lessons, growth, and unforgettable moments each one brought me. Each wave has left me with valuable insights and a deeper sense of who I am.

Teaching Experience

My practicum in Indonesia has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. Before this, I had never had the chance to implement my own lesson plans in a real classroom setting. I had practiced teaching, but only with my classmates or other college students, typically for final tasks in our courses.  From this experience,  I learned how really important it is to know my students—understanding their interests, strengths, weaknesses, and preferred learning styles—so I can adjust my approach and make lessons more effective. I also realized how much the environment matters, from the classroom setup to the resources available and even the internet connection. All of these factors influence how I teach, and I learned to be flexible and resourceful when things didn’t go as planned. This practicum experience also taught me the dedication needed to be a successful teacher. The process of creating lesson plans, preparing materials, and delivering lessons was challenging, but incredibly rewarding. It gave me a deeper understanding of the commitment it takes to be a teacher.

Personal Growth

My experience also helped me become more open-minded, especially when adapting to a new culture and environment. I learned to embrace uncertainty and step out of my comfort zone. Once someone who constantly overthought situations, I found myself becoming more confident in handling challenges and taking risks. I learned to trust myself and my abilities, and that mistakes are simply opportunities to learn.

I also became more independent, learning how to manage everything on my own, from lesson planning to navigating daily life in a foreign country. The challenges I faced along the way helped me develop resilience and perseverance.

Dedication to the Teaching Profession

Cultural Understanding

Living and teaching in Bengkulu, Indonesia, helped me develop a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. I was exposed to different teaching methods, practices, and perspectives that broadened my worldview. Working with students and teachers from diverse backgrounds allowed me to appreciate the richness of cultural differences, which has made me more open-minded and adaptable. This experience showed me how important it is to embrace diversity in both personal and professional contexts and how much we can learn from people with different life experiences.

Future Growth

One of the biggest takeaways from this experience is that my journey as a teacher is just beginning. The road ahead is long, and I know there is still so much more to learn and discover. This practicum has shown me that the process of growth and self-improvement is ongoing, and I must always strive to develop as both an educator and a person.

For all of this, I am deeply grateful to the SEA-Teacher Program, FEU Roosevelt, University of Bengkulu, the school officials, Ms. Lenni Mantili, Ma'am Dena Culaba, and my mentors, Sir Mul and Ma'am Lia.
