Stepping Into the Unknown

The Challenges of My Practicum Experience

A look at the unknowns I faced during my practicum, from language barriers to cultural differences, and how I turned these challenges into opportunities for self-discovery and professional development.

The challenges I faced during my practicum were difficult at first, but each one taught me something valuable. One of the biggest challenges I faced was that almost everything was new to me—the curriculum, the environment, the people, the students, and, of course, the language. At first, it was overwhelming to take it all in, especially knowing that I was not in my hometown but in a foreign country.

Since not everyone could speak English, and I couldn't fully understand their language, communication became difficult at times. Google Translate my partner throughout the practicum. On top of that, adjusting to a new environment was a challenge too. Though there weren’t big differences, the fact that I was in a foreign country made the adjustment period a little harder.

Another challenge was adapting to the teaching methods. In many cases, Bahasa Indonesia was used to teach English, which required me to find ways to explain concepts clearly, even though I couldn’t speak their language. I had to think creatively to ensure the students grasped the lessons despite the language barrier.

Looking back, I’m proud of how I was able to overcome these obstacles. I am also grateful for the help of everyone who was around me. These experiences taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of adapting to new situations. Each challenge helped me grow, and now I feel more confident in my ability to handle whatever comes my way.

Through it all, I learned that challenges aren’t hinrances—they’re opportunities to grow and become a better version of myself.

Life is full of challenges. How you handle these challenges is what builds character. â€‹
