Here are some video clips I recorded (with permission) during some classes taught by the teachers at SMAN 5. These clips provide a glimpse into the classroom environment and teaching strategies employed, showcasing the dynamic learning process and the engagement of both students and teachers in the classroom.
Teaching Methods
Dynamic methods used in riding the waves of knowledge 🌊

During my first few days at SMAN 5, which were focused on class observations, I had the chance to watch a few classes taught by three different English teachers. I was really impressed by how dynamic their teaching was, always encouraging students to participate and creating an engaging classroom atmosphere. They followed a clear structure, making sure to explain the important points in a way that was easy to understand. What stood out to me was how they related the lessons to the students' everyday lives, which made everything more interesting and easier to connect with. It was obvious that the students were fully engaged, actively participating in discussions and activities.
These are the teaching methods applied by the three English teachers I observed during their lessons:
1. Direct Instruction
In some classes, direct instruction is used to discuss lessons, where the teacher takes a central role in explaining key concepts, providing examples, and guiding students through the material step-by-step. Based on what I observed, this approach helps studens to have a solid understanding of the lesson before moving on to practice activities or independent tasks.
2. Flipped Classroom
The teachers provide students with learning materials to study at home, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the content independently. The following day, the teachers facilitate a detailed discussion of the concepts covered in the materials, clarifying any questions and encouraging students to share their insights.
3. Technology-Integrated Learning
Teachers incorporate technology into their lessons by using tools such as laptops and projectors to present educational videos, PowerPoint slides, and other digital resources. Additionally, students are allowed to use their phones during class for researching specific topics. Some assignments are also shared through online platforms, where students can complete and submit their work online.
4. Differentiated Instruction
In every class I observed, teachers implemented different strategies and approaches to ensure that all students could effectively understand the lesson's concepts. This was very evident in how they adjusted their teaching pace and tailored their language use to suit the learners' needs.
5. Game-Based Learning
Some teachers integrated games or gamified elements into their lessons, often using platforms like Quizizz.com, where students answer quizzes or other interactive tasks. This approach not only made learning more enjoyable but also encouraged active participation and reinforced key concepts.
I truly admired how equipped, dedicated, and skilled the teachers at SMAN 5 are! Their commitment to providing a high-quality learning experience left a lasting impression on me, and it was inspiring to see how they continuously strive to make learning meaningful and engaging for their students.
