Anchored in Growth: Reflections on Teaching and Learning
Being part of the SEA-Teacher Program has always been a dream close to my heart. I remember spending countless hours reading about it, imagining what it would be like to teach in a different country, and reaching out to previous participants who shared stories of their transformative experiences. Each conversation and article fueled my curiosity and strengthened my resolve to one day be a part of it. I longed for the chance to step out of my comfort zone, explore a new culture, and grow both personally and professionally. Finally, that dream turned into reality when I was chosen to join the program and was assigned to Bengkulu, Indonesia, for my practice teaching. It was a moment of excitement and nervousness, but above all, it was the beginning of an unforgettable journey.
I spent one unforgettable month in Bengkulu, Indonesia, and during that time, I learned so much—especially about teaching. I was incredibly fortunate to be assigned to work with two skilled and dedicated mentors, Bu Lia and Sir Mulyarman, who became my guiding lights throughout the experience. They patiently taught me not only the technicalities of being a teacher but also the heart and soul that the profession requires. Whenever I felt unsure or needed help, they were always there to support me, offering advice, encouragement, and even stories about their own teaching journeys. They also made my adjustment to their culture so much easier, sharing personal stories and traditions that helped me feel more connected and welcomed. More than anything, their passion for teaching inspired me and deepened my respect for the profession.
That one month in Bengkulu wasn’t just a teaching experience—it was a journey of self-discovery. It made me realize just how much I truly want to become a teacher. Each day in the classroom, seeing the eager faces of the students and their smiles when they understood something new, filled my heart with a sense of purpose I hadn’t felt before. I discovered how much I love connecting with students, helping them learn, and being part of their growth. It wasn’t always easy, but every moment, even the challenging ones, assured me that this is what I want to do with my life. That month didn’t just teach me about teaching—it reminded me of why I fell in love with the idea of teaching in the first place. My experience was indeed a life-changing journey.
The lessons I learned, the relationships I built, and the joy I found in every interaction with my students and mentors made me realize that teaching is more than just a profession for me—it’s my passion and purpose. It gave me a deeper understanding of the kind of educator I want to be: someone who inspires, uplifts, and makes a difference in the lives of students.
