Established in 1976 under the name Sekolah Menengah Persiapan Pembangunan 61 (SMPP 61), SMANLI has grown into a powerhouse of education and achievement, earning its official designation as SMA Negeri 5 Kota Bengkulu in 1997 through a decree by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
​
From humble beginnings with only 12 classrooms and one laboratory, SMANLI now boasts a state-of-the-art campus with 24 classrooms, five laboratories, a multimedia room, a prayer room, a canteen, an auditorium, a library, sports facilities, and internet access. This thriving institution has become the pride of Bengkulu, providing an environment that nurtures both academic brilliance and holistic development.​

SMANLI is a beacon of excellence, with graduates earning places at Indonesia's most prestigious universities (University of Indonesia, Institute Teknologi Bandung, and Universitas Gadjah Mada) and top institutions abroad. The school shines in academic competitions like the National Science Olympiad (OSN) and dominates non-academic fields, including sports, arts, and karate, with accolades at city, provincial, national, and international levels.

With its modern, eco-friendly campus and sustainable infrastructure, SMANLI embodies the core values of the Adiwiyata Program. Recognized as a National Independent Adiwiyata School in 2016, it showcases excellence in environmental initiatives. The school has also earned numerous awards, including Healthy School and Safe and Law-Aware School titles, cementing its reputation as a leader in holistic education. In 2017, it was named a Reference School, further solidifying its status as a trailblazer in education.


In addition, SMAN 5 Bengkulu proudly holds an "A" accreditation rating, confirmed through two separate accreditation processes: one in 2016 (SK No. 599/BAP-SM/KP/X/2016) and the most recent in 2021 (SK No. 1347/BAN-SM/SK/2021), verified by Badan Akreditasi Nasional (BAN), a national accreditation body in Indonesia responsible for evaluating and accrediting educational institutions.
